Julia & Rob

After 5 years of dating, getting to know each other both in the simplicity of everyday life and in exciting adventures such as travelling and buying their first home together Julia and Rob began either exciting adventure of planning their wedding day at Kumeu Valley Estate…

Our Story

Rob and I met on an internet dating site. On our first date, we went out for dinner and a movie. We had a lot of laughs and stayed up talking until 2AM! By the time we said goodbye that night Rob wasn’t sure I would ever be in contact again but he must have made a better impression than he thought! From that date onwards we have had a great time getting to know each other.

We enjoyed travelling together and on our second trip to one of our favourite destinations, Bali, the surprise proposal came. We were on Kuta Beach watching the sunset with my family when Rob suggested we try to get some silhouette photos of the two of us. Since he doesn’t usually like being in photos I jumped at the opportunity and we handed the camera off to my sister-in-law. Once we got into position for the photos, Rob got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife! I was so shocked that I said no a few times before I managed a yes!! Amazingly it was all caught on camera thanks to Rob’s planning.

When we started to look for a venue, we did this mostly online. It was important to us that we find a venue that did not need too many decorations and as we were looking for a more intimate number of guests. We wanted a venue that would not be too large that it would look empty. We only looked at one other venue before coming to KVE and we didn’t need to look at another one after that! We fell in love with the rustic vibe of the venue and the gardens were lovely but most of all the building was absolutely amazing. Annette was welcoming and informative. She took on board all of our wedding wants and showed us how they would work with the venue.

Dress Hair and Makeup

For the wedding dress shopping, I went with my Mum. I didn’t want too many opinions but hers is one I value. I got my dress from Jessica Bridal in Newmarket. It was the first shop I went to. I tried on 10 dresses and fell in love with two which I then had to choose between! It was really difficult not being able to run the choices past my fiancé but we decided to stick with that tradition. I got there in the end with the help of my Mum and felt like an absolute princess on the day, so it must have been the right choice. When I had my final dress fitting I took along my best friend and sister-in-law so they could have a sneak peak before the day.

My hair and makeup were done by Mary Estelle. She was recommended by a friend and did an amazing job! I asked my “husband to be” his thoughts on the hairstyle. He wanted my hair to be down so that shaped my ideas. I was choosing between 2 styles but Mary helped me in the end by doing what would suit my hair the best.

The Ceremony

The day was warm and sunny for the ceremony so we were excited to be able to host the ceremony at our plan A in the garden by the pergola at Kumeu Valley Estate. Tori, our florist, added a soft fabric swag and a lace curtain. We also had shepherd hooks with flowers leading up the aisle.

We wanted to make sure that our wedding day was focused on our love for each other so we decided not to have a bridal party. This reduced some of the costs of the wedding as well as reducing the time it took for photos off site as it was only my husband and I for the photographer to organise. We wrote our own vows to add to the intimacy of the moment. Our celebrant was Juliet Harper. She was a great calming influence on the day and delivered a ceremony completely tailored to our wants.

After the ceremony, we organised some lawn games to keep the guests entertained. They were well enjoyed by the guests, in particular, the children!

The Reception

It started to rain while we were off-site for photos but it didn’t cause any issues and Annette met us with an umbrella when we arrived back to the reception. We had selected music to play on Spotify for the mingle time and dinner and then a DJ for the dance time; which was a great way to get guests up on the dance floor.

For the meal we chose the plated meal service with 3 choices for entrée, main and dessert. Every single course was memorable and first class! We had so many raving comments from guests and for weeks afterwards, I was dreaming of getting to eat that meal again. The Thai Beef salad was my absolute favourite.

The service on the day was impeccable! The wait staff were all so professional and attentive. Our wedding cake was made by a friend an although I did not get to eat any, I heard great comments from guests.

Advice to Other Couples

From Julia – “Remember that the day is about celebrating the love between you and your husband! All the little details you think are important in the lead up just blend into the background on the day.”
From Rob – “Don’t scrimp on the photographer! You want someone who will create great memories and look back on.”
